Lost in transcription

I haven't been paying attention to the Oscars, partly on principle, partly because I haven't seen a lot of the nominees. But I was in the bank this morning, and they had a televsision on, showing the news with the sound turned down and lovely closed captioning for those of us standing in line, and thanks to the lovely closed captioning I was able to learn that...

SEAN PENN COLLECTED ON NORSE FOR HIS ROLE IN MYSTIC RIVER

...which really made standing in line at the bank a great deal more fun than it usually is.

Found in juxtaposition

And from this Saturday's Grope & Flail come the following two adjacent supra-masthead Oscar-related blurbs:

THE DEATH OF POISE · OUR SPECIAL DRINKING GAME

That's Canada's National Newspaper, folks.

The journalistic equivalent of a null expletive...

...is an anonymous source who doesn't tell you anything:

"One Sony Music Entertainment representative, who didn't want his name used, refused to say, on the record, whether the company was using copy protection in Canada. He also refused to say whether the company gets complaints concerning the copy protection scheme used on its discs in Europe."

—Rachel Ross, in today's Toronto Star
