He said he said he was sorry

Well, well, well. Apparently George Bush has heeded Geoff Pullum's censure, for, as my morning paper informs me, the alleged president has at last apologized for the fact that his soldiers have been torturing people in Iraq.

Mind you, he didn't exactly utter his apology in public, but rather chose to murmur it into the King of Jordan's shell-like. This surprised me not a little, as I had been completely unaware that H. M. Abdullah II was one of the people who had been tortured. (In fact, I didn't even know that there had been any Jordanian citizens among the victims; I had assumed that the great majority of them were Iraqis. But I suppose it might have looked a bit odd for Bush to apologize to L. Paul Bremer for the mistreatment of his subjects.)

However, Bush was decent enough to announce to the press that he had said he was sorry, which is of course the most expedient way of expressing contrition in public without actually expressing contrition in public. Quotha:

I told him I was sorry for the humiliation suffered by the Iraqi prisoners and the humiliation suffered by their families. I told him I was equally sorry that people seeing those pictures didn't understand the true nature and heart of America.

So now we know that George Bush feels just as bad about the embarrassment (if not the actual physical pain) of the torture victims as he does about the resulting bad press for the U. S. of A. Nice to know.

"I'd like you to know that I told someone else that I'm every bit as sorry that the men under my command got caught deliberately trying to humiliate their captives as I am that those captives and their families actually did feel humiliated by the aforementioned attempt."

Yeah. That's a real winner of an apology, all right.
